The scale can be your worst enemy

And so it begins...Emma and I had a very different meeting this morning. So far Emma has seen a steady weight-loss every week. She has lost 12 pounds in 10 weeks, which is amazing. It's a healthy and sustainable weight-loss. But today when Emma stepped on the scale we didn't see a loss. She was at the same weight as last week. Considering it was Thanksgiving last week, I think this is a good results. Even though she used our strategy, she could have gained weight. But Emma didn't see it this way.

As you know, I'm not a big fan of the scale. We are using it as part of Emma's health journey because Emma likes the scale and see it as a motivator. But today she got to experience how it can easily become your worst enemy. Instead of focusing on how much better she feels today versus when we started 12 weeks ago, or see how much her energy level has increased, all Emma can see now is a disappointing number.

We talked a lot about self-sabotage in our meeting today and how important it is to stay positive. Many of us have the "I already messed this up so I might as well start eating everything in sight now" or "Look at the scale. I knew I couldn't do it. I might as well give up right now" attitude, and that is what Emma needs to be careful. I look at it this way. If you drop one egg on the floor and it cracks, will you continue throwing the remaining eggs in the carton on the floor because you messed one up? No! So, you don't start eating or give up. You keep on staying on the plan.

Too give Emma some extra support this week to get through this we are going to talk every morning. In these situations it's great to have a friend or nutritionist for extra support and motivation.

Emma and I decided that we are going to replace the scale with the measuring tape and Emma's goal jeans instead of the scale. And my favorite measuring tool; how are you feeling? Happy/sad? How is your energy level? How is your sleep, exercise etc
