Are you really ready to start your own business?

Dear Daughter,

You and I, Elsa, have new great business ideas all the time, but to be honest not many are good enough to sacrifice our very precious and valuable time on. Time is precious. If you are not truly passionate and committed to giving your all to your business, then don’t do it. It’s a waste of time for you and the people around you, who also has to sacrifice time for you.

If you see your business as work and not a passion you are going to get both resentful and burned out pretty quickly. Having your own business is like having a baby. You are going to get minimal sleep, and you will have not have not have a lot of time to yourself. Are you willing to miss out on sleep because you have to send out invoices for your company? Are you ready to miss dinners and weekend plans because you have a big deadline? Those are the questions you need to ask yourself. The good news is that just like you melt when you look at your baby, every time you look at your business (baby) you will forget all the bad things and only think about the joy your company will bring you.

Since your business will impact your family and friends, work with them to figure out how you can all work together and how they can support you. Can other family members help out with some of your tasks to free up time for you to focus on your business? For example, your dad takes care of dinner and cleans up the kitchen in the evenings, so that I can work longer hours, and then I do laundry and clean the house on the weekends. The only way I can work on GrassPass is because your dad and I tag-team on everything at home. So before you get started, set some ground rules so that everyone is clear on the plan and expectations. I know that dad supports me 100%, which is an enormous help for me both mentally and physically.

As you know Elsa, the amount of work has never scared me. I actually never even think about it. I don’t see GrassPass or this blog as work. Everything I do for GrassPass and our team brings me pure joy. It actually fuels my batteries and sparks me to achieve even more! The reason why i’m telling you all this is because I don’t want you to waste your time. If you are not passionate and committed 150% to your business idea don’t do it. Your time is too valuable. One way to figure out your commitment, is to figure out your Why - - know your why. And once you know for sure that you have found your true passion, then go for it!
